Veggie Riddles for Nutrition Month

Happy National Nutrition Month!

This month, Gryphon House is celebrating healthy eating habits. Here is a fun game (and recipe!) from The Budding Chef to play with preschoolers and promote good nutrition while having fun!

The Veggie Game

Ingredients and Materials

  • Broccoli
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Carrot
  • Celery
  • Green pepper
  • Head of lettuce
  • Onion
  • Potato
  • Zucchini
  • Tray

What to Do

  1. Have your child place all of the vegetables on a tray.
  2. Introduce each vegetable to your child and talk about each one.
  3. Read the riddles that follow, and see if your child can guess which vegetable matches the riddle.
  4. After you and your child solve the riddle, dip the vegetable into the delicious dip (recipe below) and enjoy!

Riddles

  1. I am long and orange, and you can eat me raw or cooked. (Carrot)
  2. I can be yellow, red, white, or green. Sometimes I can be very hot. People often eat me on their hamburgers. (Onion)
  3. I am crunchy and green. I often have little strings on me. Sometimes, children enjoy eating me with peanut butter. (Celery)
  4. I look like a group of little trees with stems and green leaves. I am very good for you. (Broccoli)
  5. You can cook me many different ways; I can be mashed, fried, or baked. I can be red, white, brown, or even purple, and I have little eyes on my skin. (Potato)
  6. I look like a green cabbage, I am full of Vitamin C, and I am very cute and small. (Brussels sprout)
  7. I am sometimes green, sometimes red, and sometimes yellow. But I almost always have a bell shape. (Pepper)
  8. I am long and green. Inside, I am a whitish color. Some cooks use me in breads or cakes and as a vegetable for dinner. (Zucchini)
  9. I am green and round. People use my leaves for salads and for sandwiches. (Lettuce)

 

Yogurt Dipping Sauce

Ingredients and Materials

  • 8 oz. plain yogurt
  • 8 oz. light mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon parsley flakes
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dill weed
  • 1 teaspoon Lawry's seasoned salt
  • 1 teaspoon Bon Appetit seasoning (also known as Beau Monde)
  • Measuring spoons
  • Mixing bowl and spoon

What to Do

  1. Help your child measure the ingredients, put them into a mixing bowl, and stir.
  2. Refrigerate until cool and serve with vegetables for "The Veggie Game"!
